For this project, students were guided through the process of drawing the interior of a simple kitchen using 1 point perspective drawing techniques. They learned to use a set square and carefully measured angles to create precise shapes to construct counters within a limited space. Once the basics were drawn, students were encouraged to continue the design process to add some individuality to the space by adding in appliances and decorative elements. Students then developed their drawing skills with coloured pencils to add colour, depth and warmth to their drawings, considering lighting, colour theory, proportions and design.
Art 1 Group 3: Charcoal Drawings
The first Unit of the year was dedicated to learning about the Elements and Principles of Art & Design - what they mean, how to identify and analyse them within visual arts as well as how to put the elements and principles into practice in the creation of artwork. Based on original photographs taken in a dimly lit room with directed lighting, students created a charcoal drawing with high contrast. This project enabled students to hone their observational skills as well as learn how to use this traditional medium to create realistic drawings of personal items.
Art 1 Group 3: Organic Sculptures
Combining Art & Science: For these creative sculptures, students were inspired by Plant Cells viewed under a microscope for their painted designs. Starting with research, students were then given a wood base with 1m of wire attached in a loop. They then covered this with a stocking and shaped it into an organic shape inspired by nature. This was then set with glue and covered in acrylic paint.
Art 1 Group 3: Playful Projects
During lockdown, with less access to traditional art materials, our projects went in a more digital direction. This gave students the opportunity to learn new skills and use their knowledge of the Formal Elements to create wonderful digital compositions in a variety of ways. Projects ranged from digital photography using forced perspective, creating digital mosaics and paintings, and even recreating famous artworks. A lot of fun was had and students gained a whole new perspective of what visual art can be.
